When your fashion squad on point…
Now this is some celebrity ad line-up. Cher, Willow Smith, Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ Anthony Kiedis, plus his son Everly Bear, and actress Debi Mazar are all taking centre stage in Marc Jacobs’ autumn/winter 15 campaign that is bound to be up there hitting the season’s hottest viewing figures.
Jacobs has been slowly teasing his campaign over the last month on Instagram in the order listed above, and in recent days has added Winona Ryder, and producer Steve Mackey modelling with son Marley Mackey.
There’s also Betty Lowe, daughter to rock musician Pearl Lowe, and sister to Daisy whom modelled for Jacobs back in 2009. The images are lensed by longtime collaborator David Sims.
All of the celebrities and their featured offspring are joined by two other traditional campaign images featuring models of which creative director Katie Grand described on her Instagram as having seen 869 before deciding on the final 10.
Models Julia Nobis, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Cierra Skye, Molly Blair, Issa Lish, Varya Shutova, Riley Montana, Sally Jonsson, Aamito Lagum and Grace Simmons (pictured) are the ones that made it into the campaign.
When each of the separate images that have been trickled out on Instagram this past month are observed as a cohesive unit the advertising this season could be described as having a subtle family aesthetic (albeit an eccentric one).
The way it features a full spectrum of ages from 69-year-old Cher through to nine-year-old Betty Lowe, in addition to two father-and-son duo portraits and the model group portrait shots lend the family unit vibe.
The alternative family portrait appears to be trending early on this campaign season as so too did Ricardo Tisci describe his latest ads as the ‘Givenchy family campaign’, featuring Donatella Versace and a supplementary group model portrait. Dolce & Gabanna also have continued its Italian family aesthetic, this season celebrating motherhood. It will be interesting to see if this is something other brands will adopt as the A/W 15 season continues.
Emily Ratajkowski and MJ’s best friend and filmmaker Sofia Coppola have both been added to the campaign. Jacobs who posted the Coppola image on his personal Instagram also had this to say, “This next photo I am “leaking” is (along with Chers portrait) one of my very favorites from this “album” photographed by David Sims of our Fall/Winter collections. I met Sofia Coppola just after I showed my now “credited” (by some!) GRUNGE collection for Perry Ellis in 1992. Sofia was one of the few who recognized something special and related to what I was doing at that time. She wanted to meet me, and when we did, it was love at first sight for me!”
