Today we look to Thailand to a premium, custom denim brand named Viapiana.
We’re currently working on a report covering the expanding market for premium, made-to-measure denim, custom design and small-scale workshops that work on made-to-order pieces. It’s a fascinating and growing market and a step up from traditional premium denim concepts. We’ve also got our eyes firmly on Thailand right now for the growing denim scene, in the vintage market, premium stores and brands. Yesterday we were contacted by Ben Viapiana who is a Canadian/Italian denim tailor based in Thailand and we liked what we saw!
He says, “From the age of five my father was surrounded by the tailoring industry in Italy. It just seams natural that a bit of creative sewing rubbed off on me. Picking up the needle and thread and stepping on a few pedals of his sewing machines was a nice escape to a free and borderless world of, ‘custom anything.'”
Ben has a great selection of selvedge clothes to choose from, ranging from an unsanforized 50% sugarcane slubby green selvedge through to a compact weave, smart dark indigo with pink sevedge, to a grey, lefthand twill quality. Viapiana makes classic five-pocket fits to measure in a choice of five fits ranging from skinny to wide, but he also offers a “premium” service where the customer has limitless measurement restrictions and can choose more niche denim styling such as a split-backed archival worker blocks and cinch back, one pocket designs.
Ben’s passion also lies in the world of the vintage sewing machine and he has quite a collection in his workshop.
He says, “I enjoy using older machines for the reason that it gives the wearer as well as the maker a sense of accomplishment and care.”
