Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2019 has been unveiled as Living Coral – a colour that WGSN picked up on in our S/S 19 trend, Common Ground.
Coral Lava (our name for Living Coral) sat within a group of colours that have a feel-good, sunset-infused intensity. Hues are warm and have elements of pink, evolving from the focus on oranges in S/S 18.
“We’ve been tracking coral for a few seasons and the vibrant colour is definitely not going away any time soon,” says WGSN Lifestyle & Interiors Senior Editor Alexei Cowan. “We predicted Coral Lava as a key colour in our Common Ground theme for S/S 19, tapping into its connection with the natural earth and craft. Optimistic touches of coral can bring spaces to life, offering a balanced blend of calm, comfort and solidity”.
Pantone, themselves, say: “Vibrant yet mellow Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment. In reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy. Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of Living Coral welcomes and encourages light-hearted activity.”
Of course with this element of positivity comes some impactful messaging – in name and in tone, Living Coral is environmentally-aware – a reminder that sustainability should be front of mind for 2019.
The colours in WGSN’s Common Ground trend celebrate the things that connect us in an increasingly fragmented world. Tones are inspired by nature, the comfort of home, and the warmth of mid-century design, resulting in a palette that feels familiar, inviting and luxurious.
The rich hue also brings a warm and welcoming feel to interiors, which we started seeing at trade shows Maison & Objet and Heimtextil in 2017, where it was used to create authentic and immersive environments.
Brands are using the colour as block tone-on-tone or as accents to highlight areas, to provide nourishment and comfort to living spaces. For a closer look at this shade, head to main site WGSN for the full report.
