The Light of Independence festival is China’s first event celebrating independent publications from around the world.

Currently housed within the Times Museum in Guangzhou, the exhibition comprises nearly 100 artist books and independent titles. A program of workshops and interactive events is encouraging the audience to try their hand at creating an independent magazine, while talks by publisher’s artists and designers of the magazines COLORS and mono.kultur will discuss the future of independent publishing in China and beyond.

“The internet has provided a more relaxed sales channel for independent publications, which is able to offset the pressure from mainstream publications and electronic media. Since globalization hasn’t engulfed domestic culture, the best medium for us to voice out our opinions is independent publications with distinctive features,” explain the festival’s curators.

Modern Sky Festival and eArts Festival are strong examples of an emerging, cultural change led by Chinese youth.

Light of Independence will run until December 25, 2012.
