The Levi’s Commuter collection is the latest initiative conceived by the renowned denim label with clothing designed and optimized specifically for the needs of the urban commuter cyclist.
With everyone from big brands like Nike to upstarts like Outlier stepping into clothing the growing legions of bike commuters, Levi’s launch of their debut line designed for cycling seems like a no-brainer direction for the label. Drawing on their workwear heritage, the new series incorporates cutting-edge technical functionality, while integrating feedback from urban cyclists who already wear Levi’s.
Specifically tailored with 5 focuses – performance, convenience, safety, mobility, and protection – the Levi’s Commuter employs the same styling and construction as with any Levi’s denim. With the popular 511 Skinny Jean and Trucker Jacket as its base, Commuter Collection retains the same fit and silhouette. The Trucker Jacket ($128), based on a 1967 design, elicited the most oohs-and-ahs for its long cut with a slight drop tail that, despite pockets (including one for an iPod) and flaps, manages to look streamlined on both men and women. Front pockets are angled for easy access, extra fabric in the underarm adds mobility, and a lip on the cuff partially covers hands while riding. The 511 commuter includes a specialized waist band for U-Lock storage along with 3M Scotchlite Reflective Tape, sewn on key areas to provide 300,000 candle watt of reflectivity and safety.
Another key detail across the collection is what’s been dubbed Nanosphere Technology, an application developed in partnership with Swiss fabric brand Schoeller Technologies that makes materials resist water and dirt, as well as offer more protection and longer lifespans. Levi’s will also release some special editions with Cone denim that you can personalize with your own names or tags.
