As the market power of crafting and hands-on making continues to rise, the UK’s largest craft supplier Hobbycraft has released its first Craft Report. Highlighting the brand’s biggest trends of 2017 and outlining what to expect for 2018, the report discusses how the country is turning to making as an outlet for mindfulness, as well as the added physical and social benefits that come with crafting.
According to the Hobbycraft report, creative hobbies can help provide balance in busy lives, while improving mental health in the long run: 54% of the nation use craft to relax and feel good. Hobbycraft’s online search engine receives 60,000 monthly searches for the term ‘mindfulness’. The company offers online tutorials via its blog, enabling customers to craft from the comfort of their home and making crafting more accessible to fit into busy schedules.
Creative expression continues to be a key driver across craft: 56% of UK consumers say that receiving a personalised gift is more meaningful. Scrapbooking, calligraphy writing and illustration are all on the rise as craft activities, alongside creative journalling. There’s also growing interest in papercraft. Other key crafts predicted to be on the rise for 2018 include lino printing, candle making, macramé and weaving.
The report reveals that crafting is on the rise in Britain, with 60% of teachers thinking it should make up more of the school curriculum. The brand’s survey found that 1 in 5 people in the UK are unable to sew a button and 52% were never taught basic skills like this at school. With this skills gap in mind, Hobbycraft launched its Kids Craft Club last summer to provide enable opportunities to learn in-store. Makers like Miss Libby Rose teach Sew Simple workshops in person, while step-by-step online guides and DIY kits enable customers to self-teach at home – tapping into the major retail trend for self-betterment.
