The last days of summer – street style inspiration from Los Angeles

August is a little bit like the Sunday of the monthly calendar. You want to enjoy it, but in the pit of your stomach you know that once it’s over, it’s time to stop the rosé-fuelled, sun-kissed activities and get back to work or school. In London, it was just the bank holiday weekend which with the arrival of Notting Hill Carnival, is all about celebrating that one big weekend before it’s back to the serious stuff. London revelers waved their flags, partied the night away and drunk Red Stripe beer, happy in the knowledge that they didn’t have work until Tuesday. And for America, the long weekend is nearly here. Labor Day Weekend hits this weekend, offering that last ditch attempt to do at least one of the summer activities you had planned, that beach day, that BBQ, that summer art exhibition etc.

And so, how to dress for these last days of summer? Well Los Angeles, the land of eternal sunshine (and great tacos) offers up some inspiration. At WGSN we headed out around the city, camera in hand to capture this summer style.

Key items included those Gucci slides which have dominated this summer, and embroidery, yet another Alessandro Michele inspired accent we’ve been seeing recently. Pool slides are still here, albeit styled with more conservative outfits. Floral dresses which were an autumnal staple last season are back with a lighter colouring, perfect for summer. In terms of accessories, the choker (that we’ve been tracking with our retail data tool WGSN INstock) is still a summer staple, and the trend for rocking neckerchiefs too. Both these festival must-haves continue to dominate street style even outside of the festival field.
