Paris: Opulence is always the watchword at Lanvin, and Alber Elbaz makes luxury look appealingly progressive and feminine, playing with fabrics and construction to create uniquely covetable indulgences. For Pre-Fall the designer was at his best when he kept the silhouettes simple and focused on innovating with materials such as wrinkled oxblood patent leather, and embellishments like twinkling rhinestones precisely dotted on a cocktail dress. In fact, this simplicity was surprising for a label which often trades in frothy ruffles and voluminous gowns. But this season’s strapless minidresses, molded satin tops and a-line miniskirts left a much cleaner impression while also moving in a different direction from Elbaz’s gothic Spring collection.—Nina Stotler
