New York: S/S 2012 is Felipe Oliveira Baptista’s first collection for Lacoste, and the designer rightfully turned to military basics and the brand’s own iconic sportswear staples for inspiration, producing a simple, satisfying collection well grounded in the alligator’s traditional philosophy of aesthetics. The nine menswear looks paraded down the runway came primarily in navy blue, white, and olive with occasional shots of flamenco red or Sumatra blue providing sporty verve to a compliment of uncomplicated basics like long military parkas, cropped field jackets, and trim tennis shorts. A long, navy blazer sported gold leather cuffs and double side pockets, evoking nothing so much as a modish admiral, and was easily the show’s most flamboyant piece. Simple jersey tops found personality via three-quarter length sleeves and color blocked shoulders, and, paired with trim tennis shorts, were the show’s sportiest pieces. Fittingly, smooth leather tennis sneakers were the foundation of each ensemble, reminding viewers that ultimately Baptista’s collection found its chic identity in basic athleticism and functionality.   —Andrew Luecke
