As spring begins to take over, the surf scene equally heats up around the world . With a range of new gear, collaborations, and events that are exciting surfers on all coasts, we can’t wait to grab our swimsuits and head to the beach! After attending the ROXY x DVF launch in early March, we are psyched to officially kick-off the sport with a list of our favorite and latest surf related announcements for S/S 2013.
Rip Curl and The Woolmark Company teamed up with Australian surfer Mick Fanning to produce a 100% Woolmark certified Merino wool poncho. The silhouette is in a loose-fitting shape, allowing an easy fit for athletes to change in and out of for warmth between their sessions. Fanning designed this innovative piece for the ASP World Championship Tour in early April, supplying each of his competitors with one. Currently this poncho is only available to the pros, however, a limited edition line from this collaboration will be introduced later this month and for sale in Fall 2013.
The New York based Saturdays continues its global expansion. With the brand and shop’s first international store arriving in Tokyo last spring, Saturdays unveiled its second Japan location in Kobe on April 4th with a special opening event.
In addition to the the new location, Saturdays is also keeping us on the edge with a variety of recent projects, including the release of the second issue of its namesake magazine, which debuted on April 15th. Aside from expected interviews with some of the top surfers in the game, features also include artists, directors, photographers, and architects such as fashion photographer Bruce Weber and Saint Laurent’s Creative Director Hedi Slimane.
The lifestyle brand also introduced two fresh collaborations for spring, including the Colette x Saturdays unisex line. It doesn’t stop….Saturdays additionally hooked up with its long time friend and New York City based artist Curtis Kulig to create seven exclusive, original prints with his iconic “Love Me” tag.
Australian brand The Critical Slide Society recently sponsored the surf benefit event FIN, at the Torquay surf shop/art gallery TigerFish. The exhibition featured fins that were painted on by local artists and surfers. Sales were donated to Sea Shepherd Operation Requiem, an organization fighting to stop shark finning.
