London: For her first ever Pre collection, Katrantzou paid homage to British heritage textiles: “It’s looking at the most popular tessellations that you find in fabric — the paisley, the houndstooth, the check,” said the designer. Never without a twist, each received an injection of Katrantzou’s signature explorative handwriting – paisley motifs were constructed from a pictorial playground of typewriter keys, fused together with pencils, brogue detailing and clock faces, hounds tooth was re-innovated in super-sized colour blocked towel embroidery in a most noticeably updated and striking ankle-length wool gown and herringbone jacquards featured in hazy rainbow metallic. Re-worked check patterns in micro sequins met paisley guipure lace, composing geometric shapes in the construction of the garments. Silhouettes appeared austere and elongated – sensible cashmere knits and starched wide leg trousers, juxtaposed with flared mini and A line lady-like skirts, all caught up in the visual feast of Katrantzou’s continuing exploration into print, colour and texture. – Anna Ross
