Karen Walker

New York: Inspired by the Northern Soul movement in the UK in the late 1960s through the 70s and the Dexys Midnight Runners album Searching for the Young Soul Rebels, that referenced the scene, Karen Walker imagined the blue-collar crowd that flooded Manchester dance halls for epic weekend parties. Referencing both men’s and women’s wardrobes, Walker put out cropped tailored trousers and Crombie coats alongside swinging dance skirts and prim striped sweaters. The Soul Rebels’ penchant for patches was cited in colorful prints used for dresses and drawstring pants, as well as a sporty sweatshirt featuring the Rebels’ fist logo. Black vinyl accents toughened up floral dresses, full skirts and jackets – another allusion to the rebellious kids of Northern Soul.
