Indigo affectionado, Kapital delivers their S/S 13 catalogue dubbed “Diamonds in the Rough.”
Enduringly eclectic, the S/S 13 Kapital catalogue “Diamonds in the Rough” presents the perfect combination of traditional Japanese fabrics, Americana classics and the eccentric layering the Japanese label is known for.
Japan’s Kapital is well-known for quirky, globe-trotting influences. The three catalogues that are released each year are some of the most anticipated and collected releases, favored by loyal fans from all over the globe. Each season, the Kapital team along with their power duo Eric Kvatek and designer Kiro Hirata deliver a juxtaposition of wide-ranging themes (think Surf Cowboys, Hooligan Ivy, and Colorado Hippies), pulling together a mix of carefully selected locations, eccentric styling and of course, Kapital’s infamous textiles.
S/S 13 once again showcases Kapital’s knack for the unexpected with their catalogue dubbed “Diamonds in the Rough.” Shot entirely in Oahu, Hawaii with a mix of models, friends and local people, the brand’s 37th catalogue delivers three stories to showcase their latest offerings.
The first is a 50s-inspired baseball shoot featuring a team of denim-clad players championing retro fit jeans and indigo jerseys with rope print logos reading “Union Special.” Among the team are Eric’s and Kuro’s Dads who also feature in other pages throughout the book. The second theme sees the team take to the outdoors to reflect the brand’s more humble offerings. Throughout this section you see the charmingly undefined aesthetic Kapital is most widely recognized for including the beautiful handcrafted textiles, boro patchworking and sashiko techniques. The final story is a military-inspired shoot shot on an army base, complete with tanks, tornado aircrafts and a macho tug-of-war on the label’s newly-released century denim jeans.
Other than the generous off-shots posted by Eric himself on his private blog, there are basically zero sources of information pertaining to the behind scenes of the Kapital catalogue shoot…until now. In line with the release of the catalogue, Kapital has worked alongside Free and Easy to release a twelve page spread in the May issue giving insight, depth, and quality information behind what goes into a Kapital shoot.
