Form and figure are key at the Hepworth Wakefield, a contemporary art gallery in Yorkshire, England, as they debut a new exhibition this spring curated by British fashion designer and Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson. Titled Disobedient Bodies: J.W. Anderson At The Hepworth Wakefield, the exhibit explores how designers and artists interpret form, gender, and abstraction in relation to the human body.
The exhibit showcases artwork coming in a range of mediums. Textiles set the backdrop in two of the largest galleries, adding another dimension to the relationships between the art and design pieces. Henry Moore’s famous statue “Reclining Figure” sits in front of a series of black and white photos shot by photographer Jamie Hawthorne, and fashion pieces created by iconic designers such as Christian Dior, Rei Kawakubo, and Jean Paul Gaultier can be found with items such as lamps by Isamu Noguchi and ceramics by Hans Coper and Magdalene Odundo.
The centre of Disobedient Bodies features giant knit garments for visitors to interact with and become their own living sculpture, whether they choose to try to mimic the artwork they’ve seen or just enjoy their time playing around and making giant woolen shapes.
Anderson took his execution of the exhibition a step further and collaborated with 6a Architects to transform the Hepworth Wakefield gallery space, echoing the vibe exhibit and enhancing the experience of each visitor. The idea was to make the exhibit as immersive as possible, and Anderson considered every aspect of Disobedient Bodies to make certain visitors felt in tune with his curation.
Although unexpected, Jonathan Anderson’s role as a curator brings a fresh perspective and innovative ideas to the art gallery scene. With a longstanding love of modern art and a cutting-edge design aesthetic, bringing Anderson in may not be as strange as it seems.
This exhibition is the first in a series of exhibits at the Hepworth Wakefield curated by prominent creative minds that come from outside of the field of visual arts. Disobedient Bodies: J.W. Anderson at the Hepworth Wakefield will run from March 18 to June 18, 2017.
