GOING FOR BAROQUE
New York: Elements of Just Cavalli’s Pre-Fall collection looked familiar. There were the signature animal and baroque prints that one has come expect from the label. But this season, Roberto Cavalli and his team added new themes to the mix. First, there was a military inspiration, evident in many of the outerwear styles. The opening look was an olive jacquard coat complete with gold buttons, flap pockets, and epaulets. The olive tone and the military details appeared throughout the collection. The more unexpected reference was to quilting. Not only did Cavalli use the technique to add textural interest to jackets, shorts, and dresses, he also included a digital print depicting a brightly colored quilt. Though one wouldn’t normally associate Cavalli with a humble craft like quilting, his interpretation worked, and the combination of references was harmonious. –Joanna Manganaro
