PARIS…Africa was clearly on the mind of conceptual talent Junya Watanabe this season, with references showing up through wild prints, headdresses, draping and twisting. Denim provided a modern and juniors-friendly addition to the collection, the staple fabric used creatively for long trumpet skirts, portrait collar jackets and lace trim jeans. Smocked dresses and asymmetrical gathering kept the prints from appearing too literal or derivative, with bright colors updating and adding interest while appealing to this market. Consider Watanabe’s slouchy jeans, graphics and structured jackets as key, directional design directions this season.
