Paris: Junya Watanabe’s biker jackets are a conceptual staple, a component of his collection that inspires a specific anticipation each season. For F/W 13 his interpretation was youthful with a touch of rockabilly flair, centered on a patchworking technique that saw hourglass leather jackets merge with tartan panels to become dresses worn over cropped leggings and platform pumps. Denim also got the patch treatment, and faded boyfriend jeans came mended with patterned squares or crafted into DIY-style fishtail hem skirts. Watanabe’s splicing extended into flirtatious little shift dresses combining polka dots, plaids and solids, while a closing series of black leather coats stitched with chiffon skirts were more in line with the designer’s avant-garde nature, their lightness and wide cuffs approachably casual. Americana seen through a Japanese lens, Fall was inherently and wearably fun.—Nina Stotler
