Here in the WGSN office, the kids content team are increasingly talking about vintage kidswear. With the retro revival in full swing on the high street the look has now fully filtered down to kidswear with some of the UK’s biggest retailers tapping into the look for autumn.
One sign that retail is seriously investing here is the announcement that established UK high street retailer River Island [known for its trend-led mini-me approach to kidswear] will be launching Julia Restoin-Roitfeld x River Island Mini.
This 30 piece collection aimed at 0-5-year-olds has been designed exclusively by Julia, model and creative director of lifestyle mummy blog Romy and The Bunnies [daughter of former Vogue editor, Carine Roitfeld] . The collection is inspired by her younger years, love of vintage and Parisian roots. Using private family photos and old shots of her and brother Vladamir as children for inspiration alongside more recent snaps of her daughter Romy as a starting point of the collection. The collection for boys and girls aged 0-5 will be available in store mid-October.
Recent editorials by photographers such as Delphine Chanet for Papier Mache and Ulla Nyeman for Milk Magazine as well as our own recent Grandmas Attic & Retro Prepster emerging trend, fuels this vintage direction as a continuing source of inspiration.
Having been consumed by all things jersey, athleisure and mini-me for some time it feels right to pause, reminisce and return to a more eclectic, nostalgic styling message for kids.
