John Galliano

CHARACTER STUDY

Paris:  A cast of  1930s characters — aviators, baseball players, gangsters — made up Bill Gaytten’s F/W 12 collection for John Galliano. The designer drew from the work of illustrators J.C. Leyendecker and Norman Rockwell for a range of vintage-y looks including pinstriped double-breasted suits, belted jackets with wide shoulders and trench coats in luxe fabrications like patent leather or velvet. An assortment of trouser silhouettes —  skinny cuts, pleated carrot styles and jodphurs — presented plenty of options for bottoms, and looked right with cropped military-style outerwear. Accessories like fedoras and leather flatcaps topped off the dramatic styling.  —Anna Jane Davis
