New York: Functional and sporty influences are common in fashion these days, but Jeremy Laing is new to the trend, shifting gears from his previously organic and raw aesthetic in favor of a slickly monochrome presentation for S/S 13. Texture was still a factor for the young designer, and cupro cotton halter dresses looked especially fresh due to stripes of silver beads and plastic clips. Laing’s outerwear featured a layered bib construction and cropped sleeves for a protective flak jacket style, a detail which carried through to apron shirtdresses. In contrast to these utilitarian ensembles, the use of lamé seemed out of place, as did an abstract scribble print which distracted from the otherwise clean silhouettes.—Nina Stotler
