With understated shapes, luxurious casual textiles, minimalist styling, and a modern earth tone palette, Jenni Kayne’s S/S 11 runway looks were the picture of laid-back refinement. The show was titled “Road Trip,” and the models resembled sophisticated professional women on their way out of town for a rural escape. Although still sporting some structure, their hair was let down, sunglasses were on, and heels were swapped for flats. Crisp silk shirts were completely buttoned up and tucked into flat-front cotton trousers, woven drawstring lounge pants, or chino shorts for a slightly preppy feel. Cardigans were simply draped over the shoulders or tied around the neck. The shift dress was a key item, mostly in understated, solid-colored styles with hemlines that grazed the upper thigh. A cropped raw silk bomber jacket with a relaxed fit felt fresh. Sky blue, dusty peach, warm chestnut, copper, marigold, raspberry, and magenta made up a palette that conjured sunsets, wildflowers, and dirt roads. Some of the clothing recalled 90s minimalism, while other pieces hinted at a 60s mod influence. More than anything though, the tastefully selected designs and cheerful color combinations made for a refreshing, summery selection.
