Notoriously over-the-top Jean-Charles de Castelbajac’s ready-to-wear Spring collection read like a who’s who of a classic adventure tale. All the characters were there, from eye-patched pirates, to jaunty sailors and grass-skirt-sporting hulu girls. Fantasy inspired spectacle as it was, the French designer is very clued-in to the current pop culture sensibility, evidenced by the presence of fashion it-girls Dita Von Teese and Katy Perry, perched in the front row. Hits from the past few seasons, such as graphic sequined tee-dresses and cartoon prints, were re-worked, and new silhouettes — like a flowing printed ankle-grazing skirt — were added. Despite the costume-y guise, Castelbajac peppered the collection with a barrage of perfectly on-trend elements, including corset tops, day bras, cropped military jackets, and flirty feminine frocks.
