New York: On a recent vacation in Puerto Rico, Jason Wu was inspired by the vibrant colors of Old San Juan and the relaxed beachside lifestyle. Those hues — lively honeysuckle pink, azure blue and chartreuse — came together to create one of Wu’s most cheerful collections yet. Vintage florals and lace appliqués supplied the romance for which the designer is known, while this season’s scuba-inspired details (slim-fitting raglan sleeves and contrast trims) added a sporty element that felt fresh. Tailored trousers, a color-blocked trench and prim dresses are sure to please Wu’s existing clientele, and playful short-shorts and a luxe hoodie seemed geared to appeal to a younger market. With an ever-expanding empire — he added accessories three seasons ago and debuted swimwear in the current collection — and a recent CFDA nomination, the designer has made a lightning-fast passage from unknown to established, but his confident collections prove that he’s no flash in the pan. –Joanna Manganaro
