London: Known for his directional knits, James Long has been designing menswear for the past three years, and this season he debuted his women’s collection during Fashion East’s greatly anticipated runway show. Funded by Topshop, Fashion East sponsors the shows of promising newcomers and has become one of the best venues for spotting new talent. For his first outing with womenswear, Long riffed on his signature knits, presenting the dimension and space-dyed yarns that he uses for men. While the pieces were directional enough on their own, Long added ethnic embroidery and color jewel appliqués for more interest. Aside from sweaters, the designer also presented tough-chic black leather motorcycle pants and diaphanous chiffon button-up shirts, mixing hard and soft. While some looks felt a bit overwrought, Long’s talent was obvious, and his unique knits are sure to appeal to ladies across the globe.
