J.W. Anderson Pre-Fall 2013

New York: 28-year-old London-based designer J.W. Anderson is on quite the upward trajectory of late. He recently won the Emerging Talent Award at the British Fashion Awards, announced a collaboration with Topshop, and was chosen to collaborate with Donatella Versace on the Versus label. His current collection, which he described as “hyper-strict and minimal” showed that his work is maturing, as well. Anderson mentioned that the idea of the triptych appealed to him, and many of the looks included three parts – two-piece ensembles with matching tall boots. It seemed all serious and full of restraint until the daisy motif appeared. The playful intarsia patterns provided a welcome element of humor and youthfulness. They also suggested 60s inspirations. Leather A-line skirts with high slits looked as if they could have come straight from a Versus show. Perhaps Anderson is practicing. It will be intriguing to watch this young talent develop and take on new roles.–Joanna Manganaro
