Located in Beyoğlu, one of Istanbul’s most lively shopping districts, Mama Shelter boasts a playful take on modern style complete with cheeky details and sleek design, care of the prolific designer Philippe StarckMama Shelter started out as a swanky boutique hotel in Paris, and has since grown to include three additional locations in France and a global outpost in Istanbul. Wanting to expand outside national borders, owners Philippe Starck and the Triganos looked for a space that would match their vision for an exciting future and found that Istanbul’s blend of plurality and modernity fit the bill.

It was normal, logical, and natural that Mama Shelter – meeting points of all generations, of all creations, of all energies – settles down one day in Istanbul, a junction between all cultures, all civilizations, all futures,” explains Starck.

While set in an idyllic city for a hip boutique hotel, the real treat Mama Shelter has to offer is inside. The architecture and design of the affordably priced, high-end space embraces a fine balance of sophistication and exuberance that Starck has meticulously arranged for the fashionable traveler. The youthful vibe, complete with hanging swim rings, elaborately decorated chalk ceilings, and party masks, infuses a playful spirit that is practically contagious. Successfully counterbalancing the jovial feel, Starck opted for pristine white rooms and sharp furniture to elevate the overall feel of the space.

To tie it all together, an open-plan layout adjoins its public spaces, making it the kind of flexible locale ideal for both working and socializing. A central island bar acts as the main anchor of the lobby floor, while communal dining tables and scattered seating encourage freedom and versatility. Through the always open glass doors, a yellow and white-striped wall adorned with colorful flower pots welcomes guests to the panoramic terrace that boasts striking city views – a delightful setting to enjoy everything from breakfast to cocktails.

For fashion and design oriented travelers seeking a relaxed and trendy home-away-from-home, the expanding boutique chain hits the spot with both a laid-back and hip atmosphere. In keeping with its casual-chic philosophy, Mama Shelter has set its sights on Los Angeles, a city known for its undying mantra of effortless cool, and is slated to open its latest location in the heart of Hollywood before the end of the year. –Christina Thornell
