MAD FOR PLAID
Paris: Yoshiyuki Miyamae, Issey Miyake’s creative director, got in on the tartan trend for fall, but his ebullient iterations of the pattern were unlike any we’ve seen this season. Blown-up and colorful, they packed a playful punch. The plaids appeared for boxy coats, slim pants, boyish button-ups, and even the famed Miyake pleated tops and dresses. Furry pile that was used for puffy coats and armbands added a lively textural element. Miyamae closed the show with gradient stripes rather than tartans, but they still embodied the classic menswear inspirations. The extra-wide skirt-pants were stylish and easy to wear, a killer combination. The smiles on the models’ faces said it all; this on-trend collection was all about optimism, a welcome counterpoint to this season’s darker mood. –Joanna Manganaro
