Earlier this month, Turkish brand ISKO made headlines when it became the first denim mill in the world to receive the Nordic Swan Ecolabel award.
A major accomplishment for the denim industry, the prestigious award was honoured to six products from ISKO’s ‘Earth Fit’, a 360-degree, responsible innovation platform.
The Nordic Swan Ecolabel is the official Ecolabel in the Nordic countries. Established in 1989 by the Nordic Council of Ministers, it was created with the purpose of providing an environmental labeling scheme that would contribute to sustainable consumption.
As one of the largest denim producers in the world, the Turkish mill has striven to be an essential actor in the responsible innovation of sustainable denim production. Isko has a wide range of innovative fabric technologies and products that meet the most diverse demands of the denim sector and has offices in 35 countries across the globe. The award and certification is a major accomplishment for the business that sanctions the significance of their tangible pro-environment efforts.
The Nordic Swan Ecolabel management team presented the certificate to Fatih Konukoglu, CEO of Isko and board member of Sanko Group at its headquarters in Turkey. On the award Konukoglu said “This is a key achievement that clearly demonstrates that the responsible spirit of Isko is a daily guide and the Ecolabel certification is an encouragement to carry towards that goal.”
The award was presented by Anita Winsnes, Managing Director of the Nordic Swan Ecolabel in Norway. On the accomplishment Wisnes commented:
“Achieving the Nordic Swan Ecolabel is definitely not an easy task. Our standards are high and we have strict requirements for the entire value chain, from cotton field to the finished fabric. Our emphasis is on organic cultivation, low water consumption, sound chemical use and good working conditions. We are very happy that a giant like ISKO has chosen and accomplished the Swan. This will bring us a huge step towards a more sustainable textile industry.”
