Isabel Marant

THE COWGIRL RIDES AGAIN
Paris: Isabel Marant can’t get enough of America. From her recent riff on Native southwestern graphics to this season’s ode to the cowboy, the French designer is finding infinite inspiration across the Atlantic. Universally praised for a trendy, casual aesthetic, Marant commits wholesale to her themes, and for F/W 12 that meant classics like the yoke front western shirt, laser-cut suede and leather, ruffled white lace mini-dresses, and doily blouses. Vintage military styling showed up as well, in the form of duster coats and buttoned uniform tunics, while floral embroidery, fringe, conchos, grommets and nail-stud patterns were kitschy details rounding out the very literal collection. Although the presentation ranged through territory well-trod by numerous designers, including Marant herself, it did include a few updates, such as a western shirt re-imagined as a silk bomber or scraps of a keepsake quilt stitched into a cropped jacket.—Nina Stotler

  • Somehow, the French designer, Isabel Marant, always amazes me. She can put little and simple things together, then turns out just look so fabulous and expensive. Don’t French people always know how to dress well. The Americans should really learn from them. Frankly, all the clothes are not that special. But, she indeed knows how to put them together and makes them so attractive even across the Atlantic. They are just so trendy, casual looking that what makes her design so unique, unforgettable and inspiration. Thanks again for the show.
