Meet Riato Jean Project, an eco-sustainable, philanthropic denim brand, specializing in hand-painted one-of-a-kind vintage jeans.
One of the most loveable features about denim is that it gets better with age. From rips, tears and staining, it goes through it all – with all these blemishes only helping to increase the character of your favourite wears. LA designer and denim addict Erin Feniger is a devoted supporter of this style and is sharing her passion with denim lovers around the world with her new collection on hand painted jeans.
Born in 2013 and 100% hand-crafted in Venice, California, this impressive and colourful new denim line from Rialto Jean Project has already gained the attention from top fashion editors, a-list actors, musicians, and supermodels among its steadily-growing loyal customer fan base. Founder & Creative Director Erin uniquely sources and hand-paints recycled vintage Levis and other notable brands as a base for each pair, in her Venice studio.
While Erin offers up off-the-shelf styles, she also offers a custom service for customers to pick their own personal style and fit. Each pair is treated as a blank canvas with Erin hand painting each pair herself; brushing, daubing and smearing layers of paint to create these beautiful Jackson Pollock-style surfaces.
Whatsmore, there’s the charity piece: For every pair sold (jeans are $200; jean shorts are $100) $40 goes toward an innovative art therapy program at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. In an interview with Vogue she explained “I didn’t even know that art therapy was a real profession until I started this project,” says Feniger who picked up painting about a year ago when she was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease that makes her extremely sensitive to heat. Painting, she explains, has had a remarkably soothing effect on her and she wanted to share this with the children. “Art therapy helps young patients find a sense of hope, self-esteem, autonomy and competence, in their healing processes.”
