Interview: Pat McGrath creates ‘California Girl’ Beauty at Tommy Hilfiger SS14

Sun, sand, surf: fashion and beauty editors left the Tommy Hilfiger SS14 show singing “Everybody goes surfin’/ Surfin’ USA.” It’s the Beach Boys song that we know so well and it was the perfect soundtrack to Tommy Hilfiger‘s surfer-inspired, beachy collection.

Global makeup maven and creative design director of Procter & Gamble Beauty, Pat McGrath, created natural-looking makeup applications that were subtle and incredibly easy to recreate.

“The look is very fresh, beachy — a California girl of today,” says McGrath. She applied a small amount of pink blush on the cheeks and eyes with a neutral brown eyeshadow and then brown-black mascara on the lashes and to finish it off, a beautiful pinky stain on the lips. Highlighting on the cheekbones, cupids bow and inner corners of the eyes was also done to catch the light on-catwalk. “It’s just a very young, gorgeous easy look — very, very simple.”

Models strutted down a catwalk with a sandy beach backdrop with surfboards, with loose and lovely beach-inspired waves. An easygoing look that appeared at BCBG Max Azria, Tanya Taylor, Marissa Web and several others during New York fashion week.
