WGSN Insight gone on to identify Instagram influencers within this space – individuals that are challenging traditional attitudes around sobriety and present it as both a new wellness lifestyle and a vehicle in which they can authentically discuss self-care, body image issues and mental illness.
We’ve got a complete list of influencers in our Sober Lifestyle Leaders report, but we’re previewing three, key individuals to know as this movement builds momentum.
Laura McKowen is a writer and podcaster who uses her platform to raise awareness around the detrimental effects of drinking culture. She uses podcasting as a medium to explore “the big questions of life through the lens of addiction recovery”. McKowen often travels across the US speaking at workshops and retreats, and is currently working on her first book. She has 25.5k Instagram followers.
With 35.4k Instagram followers, Austin F. Cooper launched his account in 2016, aimed at spreading a positive message and help end stigma around addiction. From there, he launched a career coaching others “towards living with an incredible and optimistic outlook on life”. He has teamed up with recovery writer Anna David on a support group for those working towards personal and professional goals.
With 34k Instagram followers, Holly Glenn Whitaker is a sobriety blogger who runs a newsletter, podcast and online schooling programme for people in recovery from alcohol addiction. She uses her platform to highlight her own self-directed recovery plan, believing that, “Sobriety isn’t just about quitting alcohol and drugs. It’s about getting after your best life and having everything you ever dreamed of.”
