It’s Day 2 of New York Comic Con and I headed over to Jacob Javitz Center to check out what the hundreds of comics publishers, TV channels, toy brands, tech giants and video game companies have in store for us this coming year. In four words, this is Fashion Week for Geeks. Here are our top Instagram moments taken today that will make you wish you’d bought a ticket and made an outfit earlier.
1. DC Comics celebrates 75 Years of Superman
Blue tights, red cape, totally buff- can you believe Superman is 75 years old? The fanfare for the grandfather of superheros’ birthday begins with an incredible display of 8 historical Superman costumes from the movies and TV series. One thing to mention is they’re not all blue and red- one outfit is an armored, all-black costume and we see Clark Kent’s rugged, off-duty side with his cargo pants and hooded parka look.
2. The most stylish toys at New York Comic Con: Ashley Wood for 3A Toys
These toys look like they’re from a futuristic, dystopian Uniqlo x Supreme collaboration styled by Nicola Formichetti circa his early days, but they’re actually a range of POPbot toys designed for 3A by artist Ashley Wood. One thing’s for sure- I’d wear and cosplay all that swag in a second.
3. We’ve never seen anything like these alien Kaiju figurines by Guumon
These brilliant and whimsical figurines of kaijus (Japanese for “monsters”) are made by Brian Mahony of Guumon. His designs are greatly inspired by anime and toy figurines from the 1970s era of Japanese pop culture. We’ve seen a lot of collectible monster art at NYCC today, but these steal the show.
4. Collectors rejoice! Swatch are making lenticular watches again
Want to come over and look at Swatches? Those who collect will want to know that after many years, Swatch is making their well-loved lenticular watches again! This particular one phases between STOP THINK TALK.
5. Tattooed Zombie Stormtrooper
Abandon Ship Apparel took the time to bring this tattooed stormtrooper back from the dead to sell their merch. Remember, the Dark Side is evil, even if it looks this cool and listens to black metal.
