Shu Uemura’s Holiday 2011 collection with Wong Kar Wai got us thinking about Wong’s movie “In the Mood for Love“. After taking another look at the film’s images, we’re struck by how timeless and relevant Maggie Cheung’s 1960s-based makeup and hair feels today. The polished skin, subtly winged liner, monochrome palette, perfectly groomed eyebrows and bouffant shows a restraint, a mastery of the beauty craft in a time where less was more. The 50s & 60s were a big source of inspiration this S/S 12 season with many makeup artists and hair stylists mining those eras for inspiration – Jil Sander, Fendi, Marni come to mind. The November issue of Harper’s Bazaar Singapore also features a cinematic story inspired by the movie albeit with a more youthful, modern take.
