Pat McGrath is the go-to makeup artist for all the major designers and magazine editorials. This Fall 2012 season, McGrath masterminded the looks for everyone from Calvin Klein to Balenciaga, Valentino to Versace, Lanvin to Prada. Here are a few of her polaroids and insights into the F/W 12 season’s key beauty looks.
“Anna was obsessed with the blue—in the fabrics in her show, it really stood out. She said, ‘I’d love something graphic, something strong, and something very modern’—and that’s how we came up with this huge wing. It was CoverGirl Liquiline Blast Eyeliner in Blue Boom and Eye Enhancers 1-Kit Shadow in Indigo Impact. Then we did these little graphic dots under the eye, which were made out of paper.”

“We called this the illustrated eye: very strong, drawn as if it was an illustration. Mrs. Prada was talking about the girls looking like virtual princesses. It was layers and layers of black liner, black eye shadow, purple eye shadow, and a custom orange paint, which we used over bleached brows.”

“Alber wanted the face to be like an illustration. He just loved the way the girls looked, like sketches—one perfect stroke on the eye. We did a black wing with a tiny line under the eye (CoverGirl Liquiline Blast Eyeliner in Black Fire and LineBlast 24 Hour Eyeliner in Enduring Black). And that was it. Beautiful.
These other shots—of the room, and the ushers—we took before Alber’s party for his tenth anniversary at Lanvin. There’s something about the way the space looked—quite enchanted. Alber throws the best parties, and everyone came out to celebrate him.”

“Strong, glamorous Amazons, that was the main theme we were following. It was all about that soft eye with that powerful mouth. We used light gray shadow and a little bit of copper liner for a toned eye. On the lips, we layered CoverGirl Lip Perfection Lipliner in Passion, Queen Collection Lipcolor in Fine Wine and LipPerfection Lipcolor in Euphoria, and that’s what made that beautiful burgundy.”

“Bohemian decadence, that was the inspiration. It’s a real illustrated eye, painted in blues and whites, and decorated with mirrors. We did about five or six different designs, and also customized the lashes, cutting them up into three different sections.”

“Stella was just obsessed with blue mascara. And that was it. She wanted the brightest we could find, so we made our own, adding CoverGirl Eye Enhancers 1-Kit Shadow in Indigo Impact to LashBlast 24 Hour Mascara in Black. It’s not a real mascara, but it was great for the show.”

“The girls were to look exquisite. Pure, simple. We enhanced everyone’s natural features, with perfected lashes and brows, browns and golds on the eyes, a little bit of peach on the cheeks.”
