With touch screen technology so ubiquitous in our lives we are left with a yearning for the tangible. Haptics have long been a topic of discussion for many technologists and designers who believe that we are losing our sense of touch, but with a new technology being developed by Senseg called E-Sense we will soon be able to ‘feel’ touchscreens.
Mimicking the feeling of ‘touch’ on real surfaces, Senseg uses ‘tixels’ (tactile pixels) to create an electric field on the surface of the screen, thus enabling sensations on the skin to be felt, such as the textures of fabric and rock.
This technology will enable much more imaginative user interfaces designed with the sense of touch in mind, rather than from a solely visual perspective.
According to Senseg E-Sense has already been adopted by technology giants Toshiba, offering a glimpse of the next generation of touch screen devices. – Philippa Wagner
