Celebrating 10 years of research and development, Fabrican founder and designer Manel Torres held a fashion show at Imperial College London during London fashion week showcasing the latest developments of his spray on fabric.
Working as a designer and business innovator within Imperial College for the last 10 years Torres has been perfecting his ‘Fabrican’ or fabric in a can technology. Having been inspired to create quick and seamless clothing he has been working with Paul Luckham, a professor of particle technology at the Imperial College to create the optimum material.
This instant non woven material from either an aerosol can or a spray gun consists of short fibers that are combined with polymers to bind them together and a solvent that delivers the fabric in liquid form. The fabric is formed by cross-linking fibers, which cling to one another to create the garment,
Through his research he has developed a process that will allow a garment to be sprayed, worn, cut and then sprayed back again with seamless perfection.
Working with both synthetic and natural fibers he can spray washable, dryable and colored fabrics that can have either a fleece or paper-like effect -or more rubber like fabrics that can last up to nine hours.
His “material à la carte” can also encapsulate particles, such as UV protective droplets or can add in perfume or antibacterial properties. The technology is not just for fashion but can also have some innovative use in medicine to layer bandages on the skin without disturbing the wound.
With such a product as this, as Torres points out, it opens up a completely new approach to how designer’s design and users wear their clothes and the future unfolding of fashion.
