Kayne West’s directorial debut, Runaway, premiered online October 23rd, making waves in both film and music circles for its sophisticated visuals and layered soundtrack. Conceived in the grand tradition of Thriller, Purple Rain and The Wall, the 30-minute video tells the story of a phoenix, played by lingerie model Selita Ebanks, whose visit to earth is plagued by discrimination and alienation, allegories for West’s own troubles over the past year.
As to be expected from a musician whose fashion sense has launched a number of pivotal trends, Runaway is lushly costumed by Philip Lim and art directed by legendary performance artist Vanessa Beecroft, an apt collaboration for capturing West’s highly considered style. Scored to nine songs from the artist’s upcoming LP, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and filmed in Prague this summer on the high-speed Phantom HD camera, West considers the narrative “a reflection of how I’ve felt my entire life.”
Provocative, design-conscious and bold, Runaway is exactly what the world looks for from this innovator.
