This Summer, the usually bleak and baron disused motorway undertow of the A12 in Hackney Wick is playing host to an ambitious new project Folly for a Flyover; a five-week colorful program of waterside cinema, performance and recreation, in the heart of London’s creative East End.
The project has been conceived by the elusive Assemble CIC collective, a non-profit group of architects, artists and designers serving the boroughs of London, and profited by CREATE 2011 and The Barbican Art Gallery.
Winners of the 2011 Create Art Award, the Flyover has been constructed over the past month by local volunteers utilizing only recycled and donated materials, somewhat mirroring the aesthetic and community vibe of the Hackney Wick area, to be then completely disassembled and re-used in other projects at the end of the Summer.
In addition, and cruising its way through the Folly canal space, and the remaining waterways of Hackney and its surrounding boroughs, the Inside Out Floating Cinema by Studio Weave will host on-board films, workshops and talks, right through to September this year. The moving barge-boat is part of Portavillion 2011 and has been envisaged by artists Nina Poe and Karen Guthrie of Somewhere studio to create a ‘human blueprint’ to the waterways that connect the Olympic Park, before 2012.
Accustomed to seeing pop-up ventures in retail and dining, this burgeoning trend for turning unoccupied spaces into exciting temporary Art experiences, seen with projects such as Cineroleum and groups including Practice Architecture, and Wasted Spaces, not only supports artistic communities, but also celebrates the vibrant culture and community spirit sometimes hidden and unnoticed within our urban city dwellings.
