India 2020: WGSN x Amazon Fashion India

This August saw the first WGSN Trend Talk launched in collaboration with Amazon Fashion India. The event marks the first of a quarterly series hosted at Amazon Fashion India’s studio, which studio serves as an extension to Amazon’s imaging and cataloguing services, a global business vertical that gives retailers access to low-cost photography solutions for their products. WGSN’s partnership with Amazon Fashion India hence breeds a valuable opportunity in sharing trend forecasts and market research with a wider audience. The Trend Talk was attended by over 50 companies, ranging from fashion brands to lifestyle-oriented companies, making up over 100 attendees in total.

Events like these expand the scope of WGSN’s forecasts beyond the fashion industry to invaluable insights on the nature of future consumer trends. Such information is readily-adaptable and applicable, making the event relevant for a range of companies from varying industries. The event informed clients about emerging consumer mindsets, giving businesses the relevant details needed to cater to consumer demands. Guest-speaker Pramod Kumar KG, the managing director of Eka Cultural Resources & Research spoke on upcoming trends and changes influencing India.

Open-mindedness was distinguished as a key theme in improving business strategies, and the Trend Talk explored the mechanisms driving such themes. WGSN speakers presented The Vision 2019 and Future Consumer 2020, addressing shifting attitudes towards traditional cultures and how this is reconciled with the new consumer. Wider contextual changes were also explored, and these were related back to impacts on the consumer and business strategies. Such knowledge can help to empower companies with the necessary intel regarding the direction of consumer trends; in understanding the drivers of such trends, businesses are able to plan ahead to meet consumer demands.

The feedback from the event lends an optimistic outlook towards the future of this collaboration. Nitin Gupta, Vice President of technology, marketing and sustainability at Asmara International described the trend talk as ‘a great way to understand issues that are influencing global trends and lifestyle, in a simple & concise, easy to understand format.’  Meanwhile, Bikram Bindra, Vice President of GreyGroup and their strategic planning head in Delhi, highlights the importance of the information covered: ‘the opportunity to read culture as it is getting created, and see the interplay of macro-forces served up as intriguing fodder would enable brands to find greater cultural meaning.’ Such events will encourage businesses to step out beyond their zone of expertise and become informed about the wider contexts influencing consumers. Amazon Fashion India’s partnership with WGSN is an opportunity to extend their outreach and can hopefully inspire more companies with a deeper knowledge of their consumers.
