#ICYMI Day 7: @personalpractice, the daily dancing Instagram

Personal practice

For the entire month of December your WGSN global editors are coming live and direct to you through the WGSN Insider blog. We’re rounding up this overwhelming year, by cutting through the noise to deliver you, our “WGSN #ICYMI”!

It’s a rundown of the coolest moments of the year, the most innovative ad campaigns, plus super cool products that may have flown under your radar this busy year, and we’ll give you insight into the people (read: key influencers) who used 2016 as their warmup as they plan to take over in 2017.

WGSN #ICYMI: DAY SEVEN

Personalpractice is the digital document of one woman’s daily ritual of dance and one of my absolute favourites. Created as a means to stay committed to her chosen creative ritual – improvised dance – dancer/business owner/curator of beautiful objects Marlee Grace has created a stunning visual diary of a body moving through space. Her daily posts are meditative, cathartic and oh-so-enjoyable, not to mention gorgeous – taking place anywhere from her art-filled home to a grassy field. Her dance soundtrack spans from Fleetwood Mac to Kanye (thoughtfully compiled into Spotify playlists), but of course some days call for moving in silence or to the sounds of nature.

What makes this account so awesome is that it is so simply inspiring. It acts as a reminder that carving out even five minutes a day for doing what you love is enough. If it’s important to you, the time exists for it now.

After a year of dancing daily and posting publicly, Grace wrote a book about her experience – Sacred Shift – and published it via a well-funded Kickstarter campaign. This intimate evolution of her creative practice also coincided with the closing of her physical shop/artist residence/gallery, Have Company, in Grand Rapids, MI and her move to Oakland, CA. While she is still practicing and posting, I for one am really looking forward to how Have Company will evolve along with everything else this creative soul hatches.
