The holiday season is here, a time for reflection and excitement for the year ahead. To help you take stock, reminisce about the good times, and get excited for 2017, for the entire month of December your WGSN global editors are cutting through the noise to deliver you, our “WGSN #ICYMI” rundown.
It’s a rundown of the coolest moments of the year, the most innovative ad campaigns, plus super cool products that may have flown under your radar this busy year, and we’ll give you insight into the people (read: key influencers) from this year, and remember the fashion stars who left us, but will never be forgotten.
2016 may go down on record as “The Year We Lost The Greats”. Prince. Leonard Cohen. Phife Dog. Sharon Jones. WHAT IS HAPPENING, PEOPLE?! Will the Universe give us a musical break? Even Kanye is holding on by his newly sported blonde hair.
Personally, the biggest music loss was the man, the myth, and the legend that is David Bowie. There’s blackmail footage of me dancing to Rebel, Rebel as a toddler (thanks for starting my fandom early, Mom). In elementary school, I was convinced I’d marry the Goblin King (#jarethforlife). Starman and the Man That Sold The World (amongst other angsty, raw Bowie songs) were the soundtracks to my high school years. And yes, I played Heroes and Let’s Dance at my wedding. (I did not in fact have on red shoes, epic fail on my part).
The release of Bowie’s final album Blackstar is a gift – a hauntingly beautiful musical journey that both empowers and defeats. The album is like a cold glass of water on a hot summer day: you don’t know how badly you need it until you get a taste.
As 2016 comes to an end, I urge you to kick up your heels, pour a well-deserved stiff drink and get lost in David Bowie’s Blackstar album. As for 2017, I think we can all benefit from a little advice from Bowie, who said “I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.”
