Last holiday season we debuted our WGSN Advent calendar. The calendar consisted of 25 days of content directly from team members from our global offices sharing the new gadgets, electronics and clothing they had on their fashion-forward, future-thinking holiday wishlist.
2016 has overwhelmingly been a whirlwind of a year so we’re proud to introduce “WGSN #ICYMI”! For 25 days WGSN staffers will share their favourite campaigns, plus the innovative products that may have flown under your radar this busy year, and we’ll give you insight into the people (read: key influencers) who used 2016 as their warmup as they plan to take over in 2017.
If you were to think to yourself “obvious celebrity combination”, the first image to come to mind might not be an all-American lifestyle guru and a cannabis-loving rap artist. And yet – Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg are a match made in heaven. Their new VH1 TV show Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party is a hit – just renewed for a second season – and their chemistry is undeniable: the two of them get on like a house on fire. And in hindsight, what’s a better pairing than two people who’d both be so much fun to have at a party – albeit for different reasons?
This particular pairing – so unlikely but really, so good – do perhaps surprisingly have prior screen experience, having appeared together on the Comedy Central Justin Bieber Roast (where they stole the show). And while the format of this show is a little clunky – real audience, scripted dialogue, live cooking, celebrity guests, so many jokes about smoking weed – the two together are so much fun. Plus, this is the smartest brand strategy for both stars, a key way to build new unexpected followers and fans, and create the ultimate spin off TV show merchandise.
They are also proving that Food TV doesn’t always need to be serious, thoughtful and meticulously filmed, Potluck Dinner Party is just about the perfect counterbalance to Chef’s Table.
2016 needed some good things, and what we have here is a Very Good Thing. As Snoop says in the latest episode, “A toast to success and nothing less.”
