New Yorkers (and Wednesday Addams) will categorically tell you that black clothing looks good any time of the year. Despite the blazing heat of New York summers, New Yorkers persist with dark outfits, not deviating from their sartorial path.
So at WGSN when we went to capture the most interesting summer street style, we expected lots of dark clothing, but surprisingly the big Apple wasn’t alone in this idea. Paris, during the recent catwalk shows was brimming with jet-black colourways. Full head to toe dusky outfits were on display everywhere, from light and loose summer shorts and tees to faded denim to structured dresses. All this proving that it is possible to rock this colour, and remain cool. Ditch heavier fabrics for lighter ones, and swap out longer sleeves, for shorter crops, to get the full effects of any breeze or air conditioning.
The added benefits of black? The dark neutral colour is like a blank canvas and you can team it with everything from bold headwear and footwear. But, the key takeaway is that you can spend this summer by-passing summer brights and pastels completely.
