How to take your vintage denim game to the next level

Every February the amazing Inspiration Vintage & Americana fashion show gathers vintage vendors and collectors from across the globe to showcase some of the best in rare vintage product, accessories, collectibles and of course, denim. One-of-a-kind apparel and denim from eras 1900-1980s, vintage inspired-to-contemporary fashions and accessories from local boutiques, artists and artisans, records and audio equipment are just a few of the categories to shop for in the two-day vintage extravaganza known as Inspiration.

WGSN was there to capture some of the most inspiring vintage denim and spot vintage denim trends, here are our top 5.

1980s Denim Party-

It’s amazing to see all the different denim trends from decades past that are very much still relevant today. 1980s silhouettes were very common throughout the show floor and key details for this trend include: graffiti art, acid washes, and hand-drawn scribbles, doodles and kitschy illustrations. We recently highlighted some of these surface techniques on our recent Denim Wash & Finish Trends: Print & Graphics Edition on WGSN (subscribers check it out here).

1970s Patchwork-

Denim is decorated with clusters of contrast printed fabric remnants lending denim a flower-child hippy appeal. The more random patches, embellishes and embroidery, the better. This was spotted across 5-pocket vintage jeans, shorts, jackets, skirts and shirts.

The Originals-

The Inspiration show is not complete without having to dig through piles of women’s and men’s one-of-a-kind vintage Levi’s, Wrangler, Lee, Jordache among many other labels. The surface detail on this denim is unreal, visible worn-in details such as holes, stains, abrasion, tears, and sun-fading is 100% authentic. This amazing product is worth every penny for true denim collectors and denimheads.

Women’s Cropped Jacket-

Shrunken women’s vintage jackets in cropped styles are blocked with bold prints and solid colour.  Trucker and blazer styles are key, details such as cut-off raw edges lend a DIY appeal.

Extreme Repair-

Exquisite denim details are always a given at the Inspiration show. Denim from the 1900s to 1980s is patched, stitched, repaired with both tonal and contrast denim remnants. This is highly visible on vintage french workwear and denim from the 1970s. Repairs can appear on random areas such as pockets, leg panels, sleeves and pretty much anywhere there is repair needed.
