How Fashion Communicates

It was standing room only at MILK Studios last Thursday evening for the Milk MADE / LG Fashion Week Parsons Panel Discussion: How Fashion Communicates, a discussion of how technology influences awareness and communication within the fashion design community. Simon Collins, Dean of the School of Fashion at Parsons The New School for Design, moderated the all-star panel of design, media, and social network luminaries who  included: Andrew Rosen, CEO of Theory; Stacy London, host of the TV show What Not To Wear and LG Spokesperson; Lauren Santo Domingo, Vogue contributing editor and co-founder of Moda Operandi; Derek Blasberg, fashion writer, editor and author of Classy: Exceptional Advice for the Extremely Modern Lady; Horacio Silva, writer and fashion media expert; and David Karp, founder and CEO of Tumblr.

Topics of discussion, which focused primarily on the Internet’s global reach, included the  influence on designer presence and brand awareness, the rise of the blogger as fashion expert, the democratization of access to once exclusive real time fashion events, retail trends, and the shift from print to digital media. Attending Parsons fashion students, who receive a cutting-edge fusion of creative and technical digital design skills as an integral part of their formal design training, were encouraged to participate in a post-discussion Q&A. Blogging as a form, method, and style of communication is embedded into the Visual Communication curriculum for all BFA Fashion Design students.
