HONG KONG: Top 5 Side Events During Art Basel

The 2015 edition of Art Basel Hong Kong is slated two months earlier than usual, from March 15 to 17, to be held in the city’s Convention and Exhibition Centre.

With its unwavering effort to unearth regional talent, this year’s Art Basel – the city’s third rendition – is set to exhibit a total of 237 galleries from 37 countries, approximately half of which originate from the APAC region. While International galleries gather in town for the 3-day event, local art communities take on the momentum by having their own celebrations. Making its debut this year and coinciding with Art Basel, the first Art Central fair is another addition to Hong Kong’s thriving arts landscape. The event features over 70 leading international galleries under the roof of the largest outdoor venue in Hong Kong specially built for the event, and is only a 10-minute walk to Art Basel.

The Chai Wan Mei project held at creative spaces across Chai Wan is home to Hong Kong’s grassroots art scene. Organised in conjunction with Art Basel, it has become a much-anticipated event in the calendar, attracting artists, designers and creative professionals to perform outside the more commercial Central district.

FOTANIAN OPEN STUDIO / MARCH 7, 8, 14, 15, 2015

Starting on March 7 this year, The Fotanian Open Studio programme takes place in Fo Tan where a vibrant community of local artists have transformed industrial lofts into art studios. To coincide with Art Basel, the programme features a wide array of media, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, mixed media, printmaking, installations, photographic and video work, with a shuttle bus providing hop-on/hop-off services between different routes. In collaboration with leading local fashion retailer Joyce, Marni flower market arrives in Hong Kong for the second edition of its yearlong event – Rooftop Flower Market, that marks its 20th anniversary. Situated on the Pier 4 rooftop overlooking the harbour, the event takes flowers, champagne and fashion with you before the retreat of art in Central district.
