WSL, a sophisticated and thought provoking new exhibition by international artist WESSIELING, has just opened in Hong Kong. Exploring the inextricable interrelation between the fashion, art, political, societal and cultural arenas, the exhibition showcases a selection of the artist’s most recent prints, sculptures and installations across a two-part show. The first part, located at the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre at City University Hong Kong and opened during the Fashion in Fiction 2014 Conference held there, showcases WESSIELING’S beautiful Fashion Chess (2011) artwork. Originally commissioned by London’s legendary Victoria & Albert Museum, Fashion Chess explores city branding through the use of chess pieces which are iconic buildings from the world’s key fashion capitals. The sophisticated sculptures and poignant prints showcased at Tsui Man House in Hong Kong’s bustling SoHo district which comprise part two of the exhibition, explore the soft power of fashion, fashion’s immaterial properties and how fashion has become woven into our daily lives. The exhibition is currently open by appointment until 21 June 2014.-Babette Radclyffe-Thomas
