It seems the holiday shopping season gets earlier and earlier every year, and Etsy, the DIY hub, recently released its top searches and trends.
Though there will always be a place for traditional plaids, snowy whites and festive metallics during the holiday season, it seems this year’s searches show consumers are looking for décor that’s daring – items with a high Instagram-friendly factor. As forecasted by WGSN, consumers are embracing colour, self-expression and burst of playfulness as December approaches.
A perennial favorite for the summer, Boho has pushed into the Christmas scope over the past few years, and according to Etsy, isn’t going away anytime soon. Compared to the same time period last year, the site has seen an has seen a 67% increase in searches related to “boho holiday” in the past three months alone. Expect to see pom pom garlands, llama icons and fairy-light-draped plants as consumers embrace this 60s and 70s inspired trend.
As forecasted in our Christmas 2018 Aurora Night trend direction, neon colours and accents become a holiday décor staple. Etsy reports that there have been over 1.3 million searches related to “neon” this year. Products from neon signs to disco ball garlands to glow-in-the-dark ornaments feel at once urban and fantastical.
With Chip and Joanna Gaines on track for complete and utter world domination, it’s no surprise that the farmhouse trend still has legs. At Etsy, searches related to “modern farmhouse” have spiked 142% this year. What’s more, the site has seen over 7.7 million searches related to “rustic.” While out shooting retail this holiday season, we’ve seen retailers stock galvanized metal, linen and wood materials and rustic greenery.
