New York: The original Herve Leger bondage dresses were custom-made creations that molded the female form to hourglass proportions. Leger went out of business partly due to the fact that a woman will only buy so many variations of the same dress before moving onto something new. Today, Max Azria is facing the same challenge. This season, he envisioned the bondage dress through the eyes of a gladiator. The opening series of metallic creations were feats of engineering that revealed as much as they contained. As good as the braiding and metalwork looked, at times the end result seemed forced. More interesting was Azria’s weaving of tribal and Ikat prints into bondage strips. Together with the Grecian-inspired fringed dresses, these were plausible daywear looks. The snakeskin prints and knee-high gladiator boots may have been overkill, but the dresses will end up on a red carpet soon enough. – Shine Anthony-Dharan
